Regimental History
Tenth Infantry
KANSAS
(3-YEARS)
Tenth Infantry. -- Cols., James Montgomery, William Weer,
William F. Cloud; Lieut.-Cols., James G. Blunt, John T. Burris
Charles S. Hills; Majs., Otis B. Gunn, Henry H. Williams.
This regiment was formed at Paola, April 3, 1862, by the
consolidation of the 3rd and 4th regiments, together with a
few members of the 5th (see 3rd and 4th infantry). It
numbered about 800 officers and men of exceptionally fine
physique, as most of the physically unfit members had been
culled out during the previous service of the several
organizations of which it was made up.
Its rolls disclose few deaths from diseases and but little
sickness during the next two years. As soon as organized, it
was marched to Fort Scott, where it went into camp to await
orders. Not long after, four companies were ordered to report
to Col. Doubleday and moved on an expedition into Indian
Territory against the notorious Col. Stand Watie of the 1st
Confederate Cherokee regiment.
It was the only infantry accompanying the expedition and
marched 30 miles a day to keep up with the cavalry and
artillery. In June, 1862, Col. Cloud having been transferred
to the 2nd cavalry, Col. Weer, formerly of the 4th, assumed
command of the regiment.
The first active service of the 10th was with the expedition
commanded by Col. Weer into the Indian Territory in June,
1862, returning to Fort Scott Aug. 15. It was then assigned
to the 2nd brigade (Col. Weer), Frontier division (Gen.
Blunt), and marched into Missouri to assist in checking the
advance of the enemy under Cols. Coffee and Cockrell.
It was only lightly engaged at the battle of Newtonia in
September, where the Union forces suffered a disastrous
repulse in the first engagement, but received reinforcements
and were victorious a little later at the same place. With
the 1st division, Army of the Frontier, under Gen. Blunt, it
moved west into Indian Territory in October and arrived just
too late to share in the fight at Old Fort Wayne.
In November it was actively engaged in the battles of Cane
Hill and Prairie Grove, losing in the latter action, 6 killed
and 67 wounded out of 387 engaged. It was engaged at Van
Buren, where the remaining portion of Gen. Hindman's force was
routed and finally driven south of the Arkansas River.
In Jan., 1863, it formed part of the force sent to the relief
of Springfield then besieged by Gen. Marmaduke, overtaking and
driving the enemy at Sand Springs, Mo. In March, 1863, it
moved into the White River country to check the enemy's
cavalry under Gen. Shelby advancing against Forsyth.
The regiment then returned to the vicinity of Fort Scott and
part of the command went home on 20 days' furlough. On April
27 it marched to Rolla, Mo., where it did provost duty until
June 4, then moved to St. Louis, whence it was ordered into
Indiana at the time of Gen. Morgan's raid. It was not needed
there so it returned to St. Louis July 18, and moved to Kansas
City in August.
In September it marched into the Sni Hills in pursuit of the
guerrilla Quantrill, after his raid upon Lawrence, and after
returning from the unsuccessful pursuit was stationed at
Kansas City until Jan., 1864. It then moved to St. Louis,
whence it was ordered to Alton, IL, to take charge of the
military prison. On May 5, it was again ordered to St. Louis
and detailed for provost guard of the city.
In July Col. Weer was arrested and tried under various
charges, being sentenced to dishonorable dismissal from the
service, though the sentence of the court was set aside a year
later.
The regiment was then ordered to Fort Leavenworth, where it
was mustered out Aug. 19-20, 1864. The veterans and recruits
were organized at St. Louis, Aug. 15, 1864, into a battalion
of four companies and continued in service until after the
close of the war.
The veteran organization was under the command of Maj.
Williams until the end of August and was then successively
commanded by Lieut. F. A. Smalley, Capt. George D. Brooke,
Capt. William C. Jones and Lieut.-Col. Hills. In the latter
part of November the battalion moved to Nashville and thence
to Franklin, Tenn., where it took part in the battle with
Hood's forces as a part of the 4th corps.
It was then assigned to the 2nd brigade, 2nd division, 16th
corps, and took a prominent and honorable part in the battle
of Nashville. In Feb., 1865, it embarked on transports, went
down the Mississippi to New Orleans, and later took part in
the campaign for the reduction of Mobile, Ala.
Of its conduct at the battle of Fort Blakely, Gen. Gilbert,
commanding the brigade in which it served, said:
"The 10th Kansas, a little band of heroes, rushed forward as
into the jaws of death, with a determination to conquer or
die. * * * Too much praise cannot be bestowed upon them."
The battalion was finally mustered out at Montgomery, Ala.,
Aug. 30, 1865, and was paid and discharged at Fort Leavenworth
Sept. 20. The 10th lost by death during service 2 officers
and 23 enlisted men, killed or died of wounds; 4 officers and
118 enlisted men died of disease, accident and other causes.

ADAM BLOOM.
For a period of about forty years the subject of this review was one of the most active business men of DeWitt, and having met with excellent success in his undertakings, is now able to lay aside all business cares and spend the remainder of his life in the pleasurable enjoyment of his accumulations. He was born in Westphalia, Prussia, Germany, April 29, 1835, a son of Theodore Bloom, who emigrated to the new world with his family in 1848, and settled in Rochester, New York, where the mother died. After residing there some years the father joined some of his children in Akron, Ohio, where he spent the last years of his life.
Adam Bloom was a lad of thirteen years when he came with his family to the United States, and grew to manhood in Akron. He had previously attended school, but his knowledge of the English language has been mainly acquired through his own unaided efforts. When quite young he commenced clerking in a store at Akron, and for four years was in the employ of one man who was engaged in both wholesale and retail trade, during which time he acquired a thorough business training.
In the fall of 1856 Mr. Bloom came to Iowa, and during the following winter was employed in a wholesale store in Davenport. He came to DeWitt in March, 1857, and after clerking for about a year he started a restaurant. A year later he put in a small stock of groceries, and as his trade demanded he increased his stock from year to year until he had one of the best groceries in the town, but sold his store in 1866. Prior to this he had become interested in buying, feeding and shipping stock, and after selling his grocery he opened a meat market, which he carried on in connection with his stock dealing for two years. At the end of that time he bought back the store and continued to engage in the grocery trade quite successfully until 1897, at the same time feeding considerable stock upon his farm. Since then he has lived a retired life, enjoying the fruits of former toil. He began his business career with no capital, and the success that he has achieved is due entirely to his own industry, perseverance and good management. Prosperity has attended his well-directed efforts, however, and he is today one of the substantial men of the county, owning several fine farms besides a good home in DeWitt. He is also a stockholder in the First National Bank of that place, which he assisted in establishing.
At DeWitt, in 1860, Mr. Bloom was united in marriage with Miss Adaline Yeaga, a native of Switzerland, and a daughter of ----- Yeaga, who, on coming to this country first settled in Michigan, and later came to Clinton county, Iowa. Eight children were born to our subject and his wife, of whom one, Mary, died at the age of about ten months. Those living are Frances, at home; Charles, who is married and engaged in farming in Bloomfield township; John, who is married, and Frank are engaged in business in DeWitt; William, who is married and follows farming in Eaton township; Frederick and Joseph, both at home.
Since casting his first presidential vote for Stephen A. Douglas in 1860 Mr. Bloom has never failed in his allegiance to the Democratic party, and for several terms he efficiently served as alderman of DeWitt, though he has never been a politician in the sense of office-seeking. He was reared in the Catholic faith, and he and his family are communicants of the church of that denomination in DeWitt. They are widely and favorably known, and have a large circle of friends and acquaintances in the village where they reside.
One web researcher links the following immigration record to Adam. I don't think this is him, however, because the age, father's name, and mother's name don't match what is already known.

Found an Elisabeth Hill in the 1900 census, living in South Dakota, married to a Michael Hill. But the age doesn't match. However, Edward Conwell is a member of her household--this may be her brother. Her birth listed the 1900 census is Oct, 1864.
Name: Elisabeth Hill

Age: 35
Estimated birth year: 1865
Birthplace: Wisconsin
Race: White
Relationship to head-of-house: Wife
Found an Elizabeth Hill in the 1920 census, living in Nevada, married to Michael F. Hill. Still the age doesn't match. Michael's age is listed as 67 in the 1920 census, which would make birth year 1853; the 1880 census approximates his birth year as 1862. However, the 1920 census lists three children living with Michael and Elizabeth in Nevada: Blanch (Longland, recently married), Elizabeth, and Edward. Also, Frank is listed in 1910 and 1920 as living (and recently married) in nearby Tonopah, Nevada. So I think these are our relatives.
The 1910 census says that Elizabeth had six children, of which only four were living in 1910.

From Mongaup Valley, New York (not sure if this is birthplace). This is near Monticello, NY.
The Manzi family may have had a trotting horse farm in Monticello, NY. They may have occasionally attended races in Saratoga Springs.
Jack and Frank Tragni say that Maria had New York City relatives who came to Saratoga Springs occasionally. Also, one of her sisters married a Sominne (spelling?).
Mary used to rent rooms to cooks from the nearby Piping Rock nightclub. This was a famous nightclub in the area, apparently attracting a clientele from organized crime. One web link mentions that Meyer Lansky operated the Piping Rock as a casino in the 1930's: http://www.metroland.net/back_issues/vol_26_no35/special_features/30_saratoga2003.htm
1920 census lists her arriving in 1900 in the US.
May have died in Cook County, Illinois. Is this her record?
